Chapter 15

They had flown to Philadelphia, where Hinsdale gave a similar speech to a small room of powerful Democrats and a few reporters. The event had gone off without a hitch. He began to feel more comfortable in the role. Now, flying towards the West Coast, he thought about his interaction with Jackie. She was an amazing woman of incredible beauty. What soft warm lips! The way she felt! But how could she not have known I wasn’t her husband? He wondered now how far things might go.

Joe Kennedy broke his thought, “Are you in the mood for a game of cards?”

Hinsdale looked up to a smiling Joe Kennedy.

“Yeah, that would be great. What’s the game?”

“I play game called Casino. Ever played it?”

Hinsdale stretched. “No I haven’t. How’s it played?”

Kennedy explained the game, and they played a few practice hands. Kennedy dealt a fresh hand and said, “By the way, I think you’re doing a great job.”

“With the cards?”

“No. With the campaign! What we’re doing here is important. It’s important to the country. John is a brilliant man; he’s the kind of man who can lead this country away from the evils of men like Johnson and his cronies at the Fed. Together, with your help, we can achieve so many things.”

Hinsdale nodded but wondered who the cronies at the Fed were.

Kennedy continued, “You see, the Russians are a tough people. This country needs a strong president, one who can stand up to them. The spread of Communism is the single biggest threat to us, and if it goes unchecked—” he said. “Well, you can see how important all of this is.”

Hinsdale nodded.

Bobby came forward and joined them. He plopped down into a chair and said, “Lyndon is starting his shit again, telling anyone who will listen that John has a disease and how it will affect his ability to run the country.”

“The fuckin’ prick.” Joe said. He looked down at his cards, shuffling an ace to one side, “What can we do about it?”

“Get our man here to shake every hand in California,” Bobby said. “Let everyone see that he’s fit as a fiddle. Then sit back and watch that big-eared Texan eat every goddamned word. That’s exactly what we can do!”

Hinsdale looked over at Bobby and made a twirling gesture just above his head. “Maybe I could do a little more roping.”

Bobby shot him a sarcastic look. “Well, don’t you worry, old boy. We’re going to have a full schedule of activities for you. We’re going to prove once and for all that John’s fit to lead this country.”

* * * * *

True to Bobby’s word, they immediately headed for the Beverly Hills Hotel. A large party had been organized with the help of Howard Hughes. Every major star was there, and several hundred reporters and photographers had been given access to the grand event. The limo pulled up, and Hinsdale emerged to a torrent of flashbulbs and shouts. The two Kennedys had instructed him to mingle aggressively with the crowd.
